Hohenstein
Oberstetten (The municipality of Hohenstein), The county of Reutlingen
The history of Hohenstein is closely linked to the Zwiefalten Chronicle of 1138, wherein a certain Ernst of Hohenstein is mentioned. Hence, it can be assumed that the castle must have been built before the chronicle was written. Other sources instigate that before 1220 Hohenstein was passed to the Zollern family via a nephew of the knight Albert, possibly the last Hohensteiner. In 1315, it was given to Bertold Kaib, who looked after the castle as an administrator. It is likely, that during that time, the castle was reconstructed and expanded. Around 1410 the family of Berthold Kaib abandoned the castle and continued to live at Ehrenfels castle. In 1981, the ruins were acquired and structurally secured by the city of Hohenstein, which had been formed in 1975 and named after the castle.
