Derneck
Münzdorf (Hayingen), The county of Reutlingen
Derneck was built just before 1350 by Degenhard I of Gundelfingen, who named it Degeneck. It remained in the possession of the Gundelfingers until 1546. Then it was passed on to the Helfenstein and later to the Fürstenberg family. The original building consisted of a small castle on a narrow rocky hilltop, a shield wall and towers. During a later expansion, a round tower was added. Another wall, the so-called “Zwinger,” provided additional protection. From 1768 onward, the castle was used by the Fürstenberg family as an agricultural estate and served as the forester’s residence. Today, the castle with its small courtyard offers a charming impression of a medieval castle complex. However, the “newer” additional buildings were constructed a long time after it was originally used as one.
